The shocking truth is that The Voice winner Harrison Craig really is that vanilla, call-his-mum-every-day, sunshiney young chap.
Although he’s an 18-year-old boy, Craig doesn’t have a rebellious streak and isn’t annoyed at being cast as the butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-his mouth type: “That’s the kind of person I really I am, not to talk it up,” Craig says. “That’s who I am and I like that people appreciate me.”
You could hardly call his stutter a flaw – his success in winning The Voice, despite having speech difficulties, has been an inspiration to many. He must have flaws though, don’t we all? “I’m a pretty caring person and I don’t like it when people betray trust and care. One thing I’m big on is trust and honesty.” But that’s not a flaw is it? “Sorry, I can’t really think of any.”
You couldn’t say his grand sense of destiny is a shortcoming either – not yet anyway, not after how much he was hyped on The Voice – but Craig doesn’t think the over-the-top praise heaped on him during the show (by Seal especially) that he is “a great artist” was too much.
“It’s nice to get that kind of high praise. I totally believe that I could fulfil those kinds of ideas but it’s going to take a lot of hard work to get to that point. I can see parts of me that require work – I’m not someone to walk off and go ‘yes, I’m the greatest’.”
He is clear, though, that he aims to tour the world performing and thinks he has the chops. “If you want to be a global recording artist [great] is what you need to be.”
Craig has hinted he is already in touch with US songwriters: “The sort of names you would see next to Mariah Carey and [Michael] Buble.” But says no deals have been done yet.
The jazzy, croony numbers he excelled with on The Voice, and which make up most of his debut album, More Than a Dream, will remain his sound for now, and probably on his follow-up record. Why not? While the singles haven’t met expectations yet, the album is number one in the album charts.
And if he decided to venture more widely, stylistically speaking? “A bit of classical and definitely some contemporary pop.”
What are his influences? What songs, for instance, are most played on his music player? “Because We Believe, by Andrea Boccelli.” No surprises there. “Trying to be Cool by Phoenix.” A bit more contemporary. “Daft Punk … Get Lucky. The style of the song isn’t what I would do, but [I like] the essence of how cruisy the track is and the mood through the melody.”
How about the message? Is Harrison Craig “up all night, trying to get lucky”? “Not so much … it’s not something I’d write about.”
Craig is already getting a small taste of fame outside The Voice, on his national tour of shopping centres.
“People are so pumped and it’s so nice that they appreciate what I do. I don’t get nervous, being up [on stage] is like home for me, it’s so calming and relaxing.” Maybe he really is cut out for this – it would scare the crap out of most people.
The attention from girls must be a buzz, but Craig doesn’t look the most comfortable with being an accidental sex symbol. “I am comfortable with it,” he insists.
“But [I have] such a broad demographic, I’m still learning how to take control of my whole situation … walking straight off The Voice and coming on to my own tour [is sudden], I need more than three days to become confident with that.”
Fair enough. And in line with an interest in Elvis Presley (his crooner material, of course), Craig admits to practicing a few hip thrusts: “I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t.” He may or may not break out the odd hip thrust on his Westfield tour.
He hasn’t heard from his famously-absent father, admitting he doesn’t know whether he’s alive or dead, sadly. “You can’t miss what you have never had,” says Craig philosophically, before a further push has him almost reaching a miffed tone: Would he want his dad to share in his success?
“If he chooses to come out and say hi and wants to know how I’m doing then that’s great, but … I’ve never had his opinion or care so it doesn’t make too much difference to me.
“But if he ever does return, I’ll cross that bridge when I need to.”
And for now, there’s plenty to keep Harrison Craig busy.
